STUDENT LOAN PROGRAMS
The recent increase in student loan interest rates has left many students in much greater need of assistance covering the costs of higher education. Last year, JFLA met this critical community need by granting close to 400 interest-free education loans, totaling $1.8 million, in an effort to ease the financial burden faced by undergraduate and graduate students. In addition, since the inception of both the Edward Meltzer Student Loan Fund for undergraduates in 1988, and the Becker Graduate Student Loan Fund in 1994, over 3,600 loans, totaling $12 million, have been granted to local Jewish students pursuing degrees in dozens of fields at universities throughout the world. JFLA donor-directed student loan funds have expanded over the past several years to also include:
- Desser & Schimmel Loan Fund for Medical Students
- Mitchell J. Stein Student Loan Fund for Psychology & Business Students
- Hirsch Family Art Student Loan Fund
- Kornfeld Accounting Student Loan Fund
If you or someone you know is in need of a loan for education, please contact Jordan Gill at (323)761-8830 x109 or jordan@jfla.org.
GENESIS UPDATE
Last month, Genesis hosted Moishe’s Purim Palooza at the Kibitz Room @ Canter’s Deli. Forty young professionals gathered at one of L.A.’s oldest and most famous delis to network, nosh on some hamantaschen, drink hamantinis and learn about the valuable service JFLA provides to the community. Several more events are in the works for 2007. If you are interested in learning more about Genesis, please contact genesis@jfla.org or click here to visit the Genesis MySpace page.

LEGACY SOCIETY
The JFLA Legacy Society recognizes supporters who demonstrate their commitment to the Free Loan mission by making planned gifts. JFLA interest-free loans programs assist over 1,200 individuals and families each year. Legacy Society members know that through their generosity, they will make a difference in the lives of others in perpetuity because as loans are repaid, new loans are made. Planned giving is simple and you do not have to be wealthy to leave a legacy. There are many ways of making a charitable donation through planned giving. Examples include:
-
A bequest through your Will or trust.
-
A beneficiary designation through your retirement plan or life insurance policy.
-
A gift which pays you income, such as a charitable gift annuity or charitable remainder trust.
-
A gift of property.
For more information on these options, or to inform us of your intention to support JFLA with a planned gift, please call (323) 761-8830 or email info@jfla.org. |
THANK YOU JFLA
“I wanted to thank you very much for your help. As I’m sure you well know, this is a tremendous help for families like mine that have to use medical help to conceive. The fact that a Jewish organization dedicates itself to help people that need economical support with free loans makes one feel tremendously special and proud of our people. Thank you very much again.”
“You gave me a loan and saved me from being evicted. It was an act of generosity I’ll never forget. Thank you.”
