ABOUT JFLA

The Jewish Free Loan Association is a nonprofit agency offering assistance to people of all faiths facing financial challenges. For over 100 years, JFLA has provided a helping hand instead of a handout to hundreds of thousands of people through interest-free loans for emergencies, education, developing small businesses, healthcare and life cycle events. JFLA is a source for economic justice in the community. The assistance JFLA provides is unique, providing cash in hand while empowering borrowers. JFLA loan programs change lives and save lives, working to fight poverty and promote self-sufficiency.

When Judy came to JFLA for a loan, she had recently recovered from a debilitating accident that had left her permanently disabled – a situation she never expected. The switch from her old salary to receiving disability pay dramatically changed her life. After moving to an apartment she could afford on her new fixed income and selling her car to reduce her expenses, she found herself in need of therapeutic shoes that cost $1,200. When she found JFLA, she was frustrated and fearful that she would not be able to get the shoes she so desperately needed. The month after receiving her loan, Judy proudly walked into the JFLA office to make her first monthly payment.

Do medical bills not covered by insurance make your heart race? Breathe easier with JFLA’s Emergency Medical Loan Fund, offering interest-free loans to help Los Angeles County residents, with or without insurance, pay for medical expenses. Interest-free loans averaging $1,500 are available for those who are uninsured or underinsured, are awaiting reimbursements or have to meet a deductible. If you or someone you know is in need of an Emergency Medical Loan, please call (323) 761-8830 or visit www.JFLA.org for more information.

“I am writing to thank you so very much for your kindness. I am truly looking forward to finishing my residency and the day I am able to contribute to your great organization to help future students like myself. Thank you for helping me achieve my dreams.”

The high cost of education these days often means that young people must put aside their dreams of a degree in medicine, or assume serious indebtedness as the alternative. The cost of tuition and living expenses is a burden even for financially stable middle-class families. JFLA’s Dr. Penrose Desser & Dr. Bella Schimmel Student Loan Fund provides interest-free loans for graduate students pursuing degrees in medicine or nursing. Loans averaging $2,500 per year are renewable on an annual basis. Loan repayment is $35 per month while enrolled as a full-time student, increasing to $150 per month upon graduation. Students must be enrolled full-time and maintain good academic standing or a GPA above a 2.5. Students must be permanent residents of Southern California, but can attend nursing or medical school at any accredited institution around the world. Two co-signers are required for the loan. If your family or someone you know needs assistance with medical or nursing school, please contact Ariella Loewenstein at (323) 761-8830 x109 or Ariella@jfla.org

The Silbert-Goldman Women and Children in Crisis Loan Fund expands JFLA’s existing program by continuing to provide critical assistance to women and their children who are hurting and facing a bleak future. Interest-free loans help women pay for job training, childcare, rent and security deposits, furniture, transportation and car repairs and other important steps toward a safe and independent future.
